Government and Industry work together to keep Australia safe from terrorism
The Australian chemicals and plastics industry strongly supports the Chemicals of Security Concern Campaign recently announced by Commonwealth Attorney-General, Robert McClelland.
The campaign with its ‘if you suspect it report it’ message is part of the Chemical Security Management Framework established under the Council of Australian Governments, which aims to reduce the risk of terrorists acquiring chemicals and to ensure practical measures are in place to alert authorities if chemicals are obtained for illicit purposes.
Plastics and Chemicals Industries Association (PACIA) Chief Executive, Margaret Donnan, said “ensuring the security of our local communities and keeping Australia safe from terrorism is a top priority for all Australians”.
PACIA has for many years been a leading voice in support of nationally consistent and effective systems and programs for chemicals security. The chemicals and plastics industry has worked closely with governments to develop effective controls over chemicals that have been identified as being of potential security concern.
Ms. Donnan said “this campaign is a clear example of the benefits of government and industry working together in partnership to promote practical solutions to manage potential risks”.
“Industry will continue to engage with government, security agencies and the community to ensure public safety and to allow legitimate businesses to continue to operate effectively”, Ms. Donnan said.
